Methodology & disclosures

Templates

Every template is generated by code from measured footprints in feet: a chair is 1.5 × 1.5 ft, a music stand 1.2 × 1 ft, a grand piano 6 × 4 ft, a timpani set 3 × 3 ft, and so on. Strings are placed in arcs around the podium, with winds, brass and percussion in rows behind them. The chair counts on each template page are computed from the template itself. They are a starting point, not a standard instrumentation, and real ensembles vary widely. Seating conventions (for example American vs. antiphonal violins) are described as common practice, not rules.

Stage size calculator

The calculator multiplies your instrument counts by rule-of-thumb floor-space allowances (violins, violas and woodwinds 14 sq ft; horns and trumpets/trombones 16; cellos and basses 18; tubas 20; harp 25; percussionist 40; timpani set 50; grand piano 55; choir singer on risers 6), adds 25 sq ft for the podium, and applies a circulation allowance you choose. These are planning estimates in line with commonly used concert-platform figures (roughly 1.7–2 m² per seated player overall). They are not engineering, fire-code or accessibility assessments. Always confirm with your venue.
